Pixação, Graffiti, Rap and the Remaking of Public Space

Walls, fences, fortified enclaves, graffiti and pichações configure a certain kind of public space in which signs of inequality and social tension are unmistakable. Gestures of abandonment of the public in favor of private and protected spaces coexist with gestures that transgressively reappropriate the public to inscribe marks that express social inequality. In this context, however, social tensions and inequalities are not expressed and negotiated in conventional political languages.
